Cleanroom for optoelectronic device and TO packaging at SUNWIN

A densely assembled optical module board and a hermetically sealed MEMS optical device call for different manufacturing controls. On the board, the focus may be miniature component placement, solder quality and mixed assembly. At the device level, die attach, wire bonding, optical alignment and package integrity become central. For customers moving from samples toward repeat production, the handoff between these steps matters as much as any individual process.

SUNWIN brings optical module PCBA and optoelectronic device packaging into one manufacturing portfolio. Its scope includes high-speed transceiver boards as well as TO packaging for MEMS optical switches and variable optical attenuators. Customers can engage SUNWIN for a defined board or device task, then assess a broader assembly scope where the product requires it.

Board assembly and device packaging serve different needs

SUNWIN supports optical module PCBA platforms from 10G through 1.6T. Its board assembly capabilities include 01005 component placement, flip-chip and bare-die placement, and flows that combine SMT with chip-on-board assembly. These processes address the compact layouts and mixed technologies found in optical transceiver products.

Device-level work follows a different route. SUNWIN lists TO-38, TO-46, TO-56 and TO-60 hermetic package formats, with MEMS optical device TO packaging services for MEMS optical switches, variable optical attenuators, lasers and detectors. The process combination depends on the die, package design and reliability requirements; a listed package format should not be read as a universal fit for every device.

Reliable TO packaging depends on connected process controls

A TO assembly begins with verified incoming materials and package preparation. The die attach process may include surface cleaning, controlled adhesive dispensing, placement, visual inspection and curing. Wire bonding then follows the approved customer drawing, with bond quality, loop geometry and cap clearance checked before closure. Where the optical design requires it, micro-lens placement and alignment add another controlled step.

Cap sealing and leak inspection complete the package-level sequence. SUNWIN lists semi-automatic cap sealing for samples and lower-volume builds, automatic equipment for volume production, and helium leak detection for hermeticity assessment. Acceptance criteria and test conditions are set by the project specification. MES records connect material lots, process steps and inspection results so that the condition established during validation can be followed through later batches.

The value of this approach lies in continuity: a sound die attach result must survive bonding, sealing and final inspection. Process records help a manufacturing team identify where a deviation arose and discuss corrective action with the customer using the same lot and inspection history.

From engineering builds to repeat production

SUNWIN states a monthly production capacity of more than 150,000 MEMS optical TO assemblies. Flexible scheduling supports engineering samples, pilot runs and planned volume builds, with the production plan determined by the package specification, material readiness, validation work and forecast.

The same manufacturing portfolio can support selected sensor and optoelectronic projects for automotive sensing and industrial detection. A project may begin with device packaging, PCBA, or a combination of the two after technical review. The appropriate scope depends on the actual device structure, inspection needs and interfaces between the package and board.

For a practical evaluation, customers can share the device drawing, package specification, bill of materials, quality requirements and expected volume. SUNWIN can then define the relevant process route, inspection plan and manufacturing handoffs for the product under discussion.
