To request an optical transceiver PCBA manufacturing quote, prepare the board design files, bill of materials, assembly instructions, test requirements and planned quantities. Identify the revision of each document and mark any information that is still provisional. This gives the manufacturer a defined scope to review and makes it easier to identify questions before production planning.

This checklist concerns manufacturing to a customer's design. It does not replace the customer's product design, qualification or acceptance requirements.

1. Provide the board files and assembly drawings

Include the Gerber files or applicable board drawings, together with the assembly drawings and any special instructions. Keep the revision identifiers consistent across the documents.

  • Identify the PCB revision and the corresponding assembly revision.
  • Specify whether the quotation includes PCB supply, assembly, or both.
  • Highlight requirements for component orientation, assembly sequence or handling in the relevant drawings.
  • List any customer-supplied parts, fixtures or subassemblies.

If a requirement has not been finalized, flag it explicitly rather than leaving the manufacturer to infer it from a photograph or product name.

2. Define the bill of materials and sourcing scope

Provide a BOM with component references, quantities and manufacturer part numbers where available. State who will purchase each component and which items will be supplied by the customer.

Where alternatives are permitted, explain the approval process. Where substitutions are prohibited, mark that requirement clearly. If particular components have already been selected or purchased, include that information in the quotation package.

3. Describe the required assembly and packaging scope

State which manufacturing operations the project requires and provide the applicable specifications. If the project also includes optoelectronic device packaging or further module assembly, describe that scope separately from the PCBA work.

Document any specified process restrictions, materials, inspection points and shipment packaging requirements. The final process plan should follow the approved project documents, rather than assumptions based only on the module's data rate.

4. Specify inspection, testing and acceptance requirements

Explain what must be inspected or tested, how the result will be judged, and what records must accompany the delivery. Distinguish board-level inspection and testing from any later module-level qualification.

  • Provide the required tests and their acceptance criteria.
  • Identify the party responsible for test fixtures, software and instructions.
  • State whether programming or configuration is included in the requested scope.
  • List the required traceability, reporting and quality documentation.

If the test method is still under development, identify the open points so they can be discussed during the manufacturing review.

5. Include quantities and the delivery plan

Separate prototype, pilot and expected production quantities. Provide the forecast and the requested delivery schedule, and distinguish firm requirements from estimates.

Different quantities or service scopes should be identified as separate quotation options. This makes the assumptions behind each price easier to compare.

Before sending the RFQ

Check that the design files, BOM and instructions refer to the same revision. Include a list of open questions and a contact person who can resolve technical and commercial points.
